Making Theatre: All About You

Who could benefit from this course?
Anyone hoping to create a new solo performance or looking for new approaches to develop an existing piece.  The course is suitable for people working in spoken word, theatrical monologue or stand-up, particularly those seeking to express their views or share their experiences. All participants must be 18+ 

How does it work?
Drawing from your recurring preoccupations and personal experiences, this intensive short course in devising will help you generate and structure material to take the audience on a brief excursion into Your World.  On the first day we will focus on techniques for generating materail. This will include a range of improvisation exercises for creating new ideas, and consideration of models of creative processes and narrative structures.  Links will be provided to online resources connected to the material, and participants will be able to apply the ideas covered to the development of their personal project in the week between sessions. On the second day we will focus on editing and testing the material, moving through cycles of performance, feedback and re-working. The tutor will lead exercises as required by the developing direction of different participants work, and some specifically for developing the confidence and skills for engaging an audience.

What do you gain?
You will leave the course with a solo piece well into development and plenty of new approaches to the devising process. Written hand-outs detailing the specific exercises and models will be provided to make sure participants can re-use the techniques in the future. You will be encouraged and supported to take up a complementary spot in the Cockpit's Scratch Night, Theatre in the Pound, where with the help of feedback, you may find inspiration for further development.

Teacher/Creator Biog
Matt Rudkin is a theatre maker, performer and teacher with experience in a wide range of performance styles.  He has a BA in 'Creative Arts' and an MA in 'Performance Studies' from Central School of Speech and Drama. He also trained in clown with Philippe Guallier and at the Actors Space (Spain).  He worked as a puppeteer and maker for 6 years with the Edinburgh Puppet Company, concurrently running the infamous 'Bongo Club Cabaret' each fringe.  He toured internationally for 6 years with street theatre show ,'The Incredible Bull Circus', and has created 5 indoor shows as 'Inconvenient Spoof' since 2009, 4 of which were ACE funded.  He has toured widely; from Paris to Shanghai, Berlin, Bologne, Melbourne, Montreal, Helsinki, and Milton Keynes. 

He has also taught theatre practice regularly since 1999, including projects at Rose Bruford College, the Western Australian Academy of Theatre Arts, the University for the Creative Arts and as a Senior Lecturer for 17 years at the University of Brighton.
