I've always remembered something Sanford Meisner, my acting teacher, told us. When you create a character, it's like making a chair, except instead of making something out of wood, you make it out of yourself. That's the actor's craft - using yourself to create a character.
Play scenes and perform monologues, rich in emotional colour and full of instinctive choices, while remaining true to the author’s intentions and a director’s vision.
Text and character work is introduced in this final stage of the Meisner Technique, to build on the emotional development and preparation work covered in Stage 2. You will be taught a wide range of effective tools and techniques to craft performances that are truthful, and emotionally resonant, while also learning how to develop character and apply your work to specific genres and styles. This will give you the tools and the confidence to create emotionally charged, detailed, and compelling performances, whilst adapting to specific acting challenges such as genre, receiving direction, and independent problem solving, such as staging, blocking, working with props and creating environment.
Throughout the final stage of the training, you will be encouraged to make links between other acting techniques. This will prepare you to be open, receptive and respectful when working professionally with directors, practitioners and actors of different disciplines and backgrounds.
As one of the few institutions that trains actors in the full technique, by taking Stage 3 Meisner, you will complete your Meisner training; understanding how to apply all aspects of the technique to your acting.
Techniques taught in Meisner Stage 3 include:
- Text analysis
- Research skills
- Adapting to genre
- Cold reading skills
- Following direction
- Physical impediments
- Line learning technique
- Character-based physicality
- Moment to moment spontaneity with text
- Integrating work from Stage 2 – emotional preparation, relationships, shared events, twists
Fabulous, challenging, exciting, scary! The cherry on the cake! Do it, Do it, do it
