Calling European Theatre Makers with projects in development! We are programming two scratch nights in October & November 2022 in the lead-up to our annual Voila! Europe Theatre Festival. Do you have an idea for a new show, or a work-in-progress that needs some audience feedback? In our brand new scratch night, we’re putting European artists in the spotlight.
This opportunity aims to provide a platform for independent artists and companies to present your projects, build your network, and experiment with new ideas - as well as giving the Voila! Europe team a chance to get to know your work. Some shows that have started at a past scratch night have ended up with full productions in the Voila! Europe Theatre Festival in subsequent years.
We are now accepting proposals for 10-15 minute pieces. Each performance will be followed by a short Q&A session, to receive feedback from a supportive audience of fellow artists and European Theatre enthusiasts. Please read our FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) below for more details about how the scratch night works.
Apply by 11:59pm on Sunday, 14 August, 2022.
FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
What is a scratch night and how does it work?
Scratch nights are an opportunity for artists to share an extract of a developing work with an audience in order to gain feedback, new ideas, or attract interest for the final product. They are fun and informal, with a focus on openness and experimentation.
What’s the format?
The scratch night will feature 4-5 pieces, with followed by a Q&A with the artists and audience.
When & where are they?
The 2nd of October at Camden People’s Theatre and the 7th of November at The Cockpit. Tech rehearsals will take place on the afternoon of each performance, from 2:00pm. The performance will begin at 7:00pm. When you apply, please let us know if you prefer to perform on either the 2nd of October or the 7th of November.
How long should my piece be?
Between 10-15 minutes
What technical facilities are available?
Each piece will have a 45-minute tech rehearsal with a technician. It will be possible to design basic lights, sound, and projection within the existing rig at the venue. Bear in mind that due to the format of the night, technically demanding shows may not be suitable.
At Camden People’s Theatre, the stage is 5.7m deep x 6.6m wide, with the audience in an end-on configuration. At The Cockpit, the stage is 8.4m deep x 6.5m wide, with the audience in thrust configuration (seated on three sides).
Does it need to be in English?
We welcome performances in all languages - but consider what a mainly English speaking audience will need, to be able to give feedback on your piece. You may need to provide projected surtitles, or a printed translation or summary, etc.
Do I need to be based in London?
The scratch nights are held live and in person at Camden People’s Theatre and The Cockpit. We expect that most artists and companies participating will be based in London, but we are open to programming pieces coming from out of town or abroad, if you are able to make your own arrangements for travel and accommodation.
What does it cost to participate?
There is no fee to apply or participate. Each artist or company will be responsible for the costs associated with creating their performance.
Will I receive a share of the box office?
No, there will be no box office income to speak of, as the tickets are only £1. Any income goes to The Cockpit, the producer of Voila! Europe, to support the production costs.
Am I able to invite people to see the show?
Absolutely! We encourage all participants to use the scratch nights as an opportunity to network with potential programmers, collaborators and friends.
